The Launceston Golf Club & Kew Country Club will be very well represented with both their ladies and mens teams qualifying for the national title at the Holden Scramble Championship Final.
Launceston’s two squads led by their Head PGA Professional Daniel Smith, held off a host of teams to grab a spot available at their Regional Final, played at Claremont Golf Club.
The ladies team of Julie Peltzer, Suzan Bezette, Angela Bowden and Helen Palmer will be joined by the mens team made up of Greg Longmore, Daniel Murray, Andrew Swain, and Daniel Harris.
Both teams will now compete for the national title at the Holden Scramble Championship Final to be held at Twin Waters Golf Club, on Queenslands Sunshine Coast from 18 – 21 May.
“Everyone played great, especially Susan. She was holing monster putts all day,” said Smith.
“Daniel was sensational, we love having him play with us,” added ladies team member Susan Bezette, the ladies will be under the watchful eye of former Launceston Golf Club Professional Jason Russell for the Final.
“It was a fabulous day. The scenery at Claremont was beautiful by the river, we are all great friends so there was a lot of laughter shared on the day.”
Earlier, Smith helped the mens team advance through to the Scramble’s biggest stage.
“It was Smith’s monster drives that helped us through the competition,” said Daniel Murray, Launceston’s mens team member.
“Although Greg did out drive him on the 5th and he wasn’t happy,” jokingly added Murray.
This will be Smith’s first appearance at the Holden Scramble Championship Final with two teams under his watch.
“It’s exciting to have two teams qualifying through this year! I’m extremely proud and looking forward to the final,” said Smith.
“I’m planning to hold a friendly competition against the two teams. I think it would be beneficial for both teams to prepare this way.”
Launceston GC join a number of clubs with strong representation on the Sunshine Coast, Kew Country Club has also qualified two teams through to the Championship Final and the club’s Head PGA Professional Luke Garel is excited to get both teams ready together.
The mixed team of Craig Malzard, Jay Younger, Ken Selway and Shane Madden will be joined by the ladies team made up of Leah Wright, Glenys Cummings, Julianne Stace and Samantha Ansley to compete on Scramble’s biggest stage.
Garel said the budding golfers won’t be rusty, promising to organise a few practice sessions ahead of the Final.
“I have planned to run clinics for both teams to ensure everyone’s tools are nice and sharp for the Final,” said Garel.
The ladies event was held at Riverside Oaks, Garel’s played his second Regional Final for the year.
“Luke is a great teacher and we can’t wait to improve as much as we can before the final,” added Leah Wright, Kew ladies team member.
“It was a fantastic day. The greens were in beautiful condition and we combined really well as a team.
“We love having a Professional like Luke play with us. He’s a very upbeat person and can putt like a demon!”
These ladies are no strangers to the Holden Scramble and are excited to finally make it to the Championship.
“Glenys, Julianne and I have been playing together for five years now. Sam joined this year and she is a great addition to the team,” added Wright.
“We made it to the state final together two years ago and came third, so we’re thrilled to be progressing to the Championship this year!”
Garel guided the mixed team through to the Final by winning the Bonville International Golf Club earlier in March.
“It was great to play at the mixed event at Bonville, everyone pitched in and it was a real team effort,” added Garel.
“We even had our highest marker take his final tee shot at the last hole. He stood up and hit the shot that we needed, executing it perfectly.”
