Warwick Golf Club and Riverlakes Golf Club have held onto their overnight lead following the second round of the Volkswagen Scramble Championship Final at Twin Waters Golf Club on the Sunshine Coast despite some tough competition on course.

Maintaining their lead by just 0.8 points following an early charge from Esperance Golf Club, Warwick Head Professional Sam Eaves and his team of Neil Moore, Caleb King, Rhys Farrell and Chris Hynes recorded a blemish-free round of 11-under 61 and a score of 55.1 nett for a 106.2 total in round two to top the leaderboard.

“We got off to a hot start on the front-9, we just lost it a little bit on the back-9,” said Eaves.

“A couple of the boys struggled a little bit with their drivers but it was a good solid day.

“The guys didn’t drive it as well as what they did yesterday so overall they felt the pressure to get off the tee nicely; definitely a lot of scrambling at the Scramble today.”

Holding the lead into the final round of the Championship Final in 2018, Eaves will take a similar approach in 2019 in an attempt to take back-to-back Scramble victories.

“I think it’ll just be much the same as what we’ve been doing for the last couple of days,” Eaves said of his game plan.

“We’ll just take each shot as it comes and try and make the right decision where we can.”

Teeing off early in round two, the mixed team from Esperance Golf Club lead by adopted Pro Rob Farley, Head Professional at Marangaroo Golf Club, of Tina Potts, Ryan Potts, Sean Randell and Carl Johnstone moved into the lead early in the day to sit ahead Warwick and third-placed South Lakes Golf Club for majority of the round.

Firing seven birdies, two eagles and a bogey, a great chip in for birdie by Tina Potts on their final hole was the cherry on top for the Esperance team.

“It was very good; we putted very well and Tina chipped exceptionally well,” said Rob Farley.

“She chipped in on the last for birdie and we just did some nice things. Sean putted exceptionally well as well so it’s all about the putting.”

“He also hit a wedge that nearly went in for two, it lipped out but that was really good. Carl hit a couple of really long drives on some par-5s so we were set up to get right next to the greens to make birdies which was great and I hit one or two good shots,” laughed Farley.

The WA PGA Chairman was thrilled to be a part of the Championship Final and see his team up towards the pointy end.

“It’s just really pleasing to see how well the event is run,” added Farley. “As Chairman or not it’s just great to be here.”

“These guys are just having a lot of fun. They’re enjoying playing their golf and to have a good score the team has to work together. If someone has a bad drive someone else steps up and they’re just having fun doing that.”

Riverlakes Golf Club have extended their lead in the Women’s Volkswagen Scramble Championship Final standings after firing a round of 4-under 68 and a nett score of 58.8 in round two.

Describing their second round as ‘tough’, Riverlakes Golf Club Head Professional Mark Poelstra said faster greens on the Twin Waters Golf Club threw in a curveball for the team.

“I think we’re up by 4.4 shots so we’ve increased by half a shot from yesterday; I’m happy with that sort of lead going into the last round,” commented Poelstra.

“They were a little bit quicker today after firming up a bit from yesterday,” said Poelstra of the greens. “The course was still a bit wet but heaps better than yesterday.”

Like the leading mixed team from Warwick Golf Club, the Riverlakes Golf Club team will stick to their game plan going into the final round.

“We won’t do much different to yesterday. We’ll have a few drinks this afternoon and approach it the same as what we have the last two days, just go out and enjoy it.”
