The Women’s Volkswagen Scramble at Inverell Golf Club has gone from strength to strength in recent years, showing that even the smallest of clubs can produce some of the best Scramble events.

The club in rural New South Wales banded together earlier this month to run their third consecutive Volkswagen Scramble event in an effort that resulted in their biggest ever tournament turnout.

With no PGA Professional currently at the club, Inverell Scramble coordinator Sue Urquhart has taken on the role of running the local event and under her leadership, it has continued to improve.

“It is the biggest field we have had in the three years as we had only 14 teams the previous two years,” Urquhart said.

Whilst Sue is the one pulling everything together it is a whole club effort that ensures the club runs a successful event.

“We had six Inverell veteran men come out and write up our results board, check the scorecards, help get the carts out and be spotters out on the course.”

Urquhart understands that the club alone is not big enough to support an event, but she rallies women from other clubs in the district to come and support their Volkswagen Scramble.

“We had two teams from Armidale (125km away), three teams from Guyra (89km away), two teams from Glen Innes (67km away), a team from Moree (141km away) and the two from Tenterfield/Barraba travelled over 200km’s. With 10 away teams from such a distance it’s an effort that I’m proud of,” Urquhart beamed.

However, it was a team of locals who won the day, with with the team of Sandra Williams, Elizabeth Hobday, Gloria Winmill and Anne Coote posting a Nett score of 61.5.

The ladies have not only won their share of prizes from Callaway, but will also now move through to the Volkswagen Scramble State Final next March for their chance to win through to the Championship Final on the Sunshine Coast in May.
