A young brigade of golfers have sealed a narrow victory in the second running of the Taree Open Volkswagen Scramble local event with just .23 of a shot in it.

Bailey Smith, 22, Danny Bisby, 18, Jess Googh, 18 and Kyle McMaster, 21 bested a field of 88 players in wet conditions for a spot in the Volkswagen Scramble Regional Final.

Todd Watkin, club manager, was pleased to host a successful event.

“Golfing numbers have increased this year due to COVID-19 and the much improved condition of the course after suffering from drought and bushfires last year has helped too,” said Watkin.

“The young gentlemen were wrapped to have won through to the Regional Final; it came down to smallest of margins.”

Despite playing many social rounds as a group the Volkswagen Scramble event was their first as a team and undoubtedly, the first of many.

“We hadn’t played in a Volkswagen Scramble together as a team before and we didn’t expect to play as well as we did,” said Smith.

“The elimination ambrose format is good fun to play. We think our relaxed behaviour on the course proved to be the difference in the end.”

Andrew Miedecke from Taree Volkswagen offered a hole-in-one car as an extra incentive for players on the day.

“It was our pleasure to support the Taree Golf Club and the local community that continues to support us,” said Miedecke.

“We had the opportunity to play as a social group in the event and it was great to be able to attend the presentations afterwards, its invaluable time for us to be able to connect with the players and build rapport.”

“It’s important that the players in the event are informed that the sales offer on reward, the $1,000 discount, extends to their immediate family members as well.”

“We were excited for the par 3 hole-in-one car opportunity; Jess and Kyle hit the green but it ended there,” said Smith.

“We were consistent all day, we had five birdies on the front 9 and four birdies on the back 9. I’ll give credit to all the boys, there weren’t any extraordinary shots we were able to just play solid golf.”

“It was great to have Taree Volkswagen sponsor our event. The hole-in-one car was a big hit amongst the players,” said Watkin.

“We look forward to hosting our women’s event in March.”

Winning teams from local events progress to the Regional Finals which will be held across the country in April 2021. Winning teams will assemble at a premium venue in each state to battle for the chance to make the Championship Final in May.
