It’s not the No.1 choice of team captain Chris Duke but Taylor Swift is providing the soundtrack to Nudgee Golf Club’s push for victory at the Women’s Scramble Championship Final at Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club.
The leaders by two after Round 1, Nudgee matched their round of 16.7-under 53.3 on day two to be 33.4-under par ahead of the third and final round on Thursday.
Lucindale Country Club (54) are their nearest challengers 5.4 shots back with Mosman Park Golf Club (55.2) making birdie on their final hole to snatch the third and final spot inside the cut-line by 0.2 of a shot from Rossdale Golf Club.
Highlighted by a holed bunker shot by Lara Forster for a nett albatross at the par-5 14th and a superb birdie from Wendy Edmiston at the par-3 third, Nudgee had 11-under off the stick on Wednesday to move further ahead.
Such is the spirit in which the Women’s Scramble is played, music is accompanying them around The Palms Golf Course at Sanctuary Cove, their PGA Professional threatening to take control of the playlist for the last round.
“At this point it’s Brooke, but there is definitely too much Taylor Swift for my liking,” joke Duke of Brooke O’Keeffe’s musical choices through two rounds.
“I may have to overrule as team captain and put something decent on instead.”
It would be a brave captain, however, who would change a winning formula.
Starting from the par-4 11th, the Nudgee team began with seven straight threes to start their round, Brooke disappointed they didn’t make it eight at the par-4 18th.
A nett eagle at the par-5 first was followed by three further birdies before the finished with a nett eagle at the par-4 ninth and birdie at the par-5 10th.
They picked up three shots with their eagle on 14, Duke revealing that they discussed whether taking their third shot from the bunker was the right play.
“We were debating whether or not we should play it out of the bunker or play a wedge shot in,” Duke said.
“I just said to the girls, ‘You’ve got this, you’ve played plenty of bunker shots so let’s give it a go.’
“I had to check before we played the shot on whether we could rake bunker in between shots. We were told that we couldn’t and then Lara stepped up and holed it.
“Definitely a good boost that one.”
With a handy buffer heading into the final round, Duke doesn’t expect the atmosphere within the group to change on Thursday.
“They know how difficult it is to win a Scramble event so we’re just enjoying our time on the Gold Coast and enjoying the nightlife, for sure,” he said.
“Everyone is great fun, having a laugh and getting into the spirit of the event.
“If everyone plays good, then great.”
Seeking their first win at their third attempt, Lucindale stayed in contention thanks in part to three nett eagles in the space of four holes late in their second round.
Led by Mount Gambier PGA Professional Craig Davis, Lucindale made birdies on 12 and 13 and then two more at 14 and 15 that counted as eagles with handicap shots applied.
Following a par on the difficult par-3 16th, they made another birdie for nett eagle at the par-4 17th, coming home in 9-under for a round of 61, nett 54.
The Mosman Park team left their run to make the cut late, PGA Professional Tony Howell, Penelope-Jane Radunovich, Samantha Prost, Leith Elliot and Sophie Williams making birdies at their final two holes, Sophie walking in a 10-footer on 18 to move the team into the top three.
