The Holden Scramble Championship Final has got off to an absolute flyer under inclement weather today at the magnificent Twin Waters Golf Club on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Numerous teams making their presence felt early on, but it was Palm Meadows Golf Club (Qld) who have taken a commanding lead after an impressive opening round score of 48.9 nett, two and half shots clear of Ballarat Golf Club (Vic) who also have some breathing space from third position.
Palm Meadows got off to a great start, birdying their first hole and carrying that momentum through the round under rain soaked conditions.
Palm Meadows also had the best gross of the day with an outstanding round of 17 under and will be the team to beat if that form continues for the rest of the tournament.
“The team could not have combined any better” said Matt Kiernan, PGA Professional at Palm Meadows Golf Club
“We left nothing out on course holing everything on the putting surface”.
Other exceptional performances on day one include Glenn Virgo of Kalgoorlie Golf Club who had a slam-dunk eagle on the 13th hole. Glenn was able to hole his iron shot on the tough Par 4 to provide a spark for their round.
In the Women’s Holden Scramble Championship Final, Barossa Valley Golf Club, lead by Head Professional Ian Devlin, have bolted from the gates to shoot the lights out, posting a first round score of 53.6 nett. Unfortunately, the Championship Final is a marathon not a sprint, so they will be have to keep up their good form to hold off Katanning Golf Club and Laidley Golf Club.
Teams had to battle the rain as well as a few hangovers today, after teams enjoyed the festivities of Friday’s night Welcome Dinner at Twin Waters Golf Club were special guest Ian Baker-Finch shared some insight on the game.
Good conditions and more low scores are forecast for tomorrow as teams all try to make the cut where the top half will be joined by a PGA Tour Professional.
