Balgowlah Golf Club has taken their Volkswagen Scramble to a new level by more than doubling their field size in 2020.

Located 40 minutes north of Sydney’s CBD and stone’s throw away from Manly beach, a hefty field of 100 participants teed it up in the event held on Saturday 29 August.

After hosting the event for six years, Head PGA Professional Matt Partridge and wife Barbie Cook couldn’t believe the turnout they received.

“Golf has been absolutely insane since the beginning of COVID, now we have so many new members and a huge amount of social players wanting to play. We have to knock people back all the time,” Cook said.

Determined to strike while the iron was hot, Matt and Barbie took full advantage of the increase in golf participation and advertised their event through different channels.

“We really wanted to make a go of it this year. In previous years we would send out an email to our database but this year we got one of our younger staff to push it onto our social media and we utilized the club newsletter as well,” she said.

“Of course word of mouth was a big driver, with plenty of events on every weekend, everyone knew the upcoming schedule.”

The winning team consisted of Jason Perry, Andrew Wyllie, Daniel Waygood and Todd Schuiling with a net score of 50.1.

Bill Buckle Volkswagen Sales Manager Clive Barclay-Sellers supported the day, even offered a hole-in-one car.

“I think it’s incredibly important to have an ongoing relationship with a golf club in our local community. The incentive of having a special deal for those who participate in a Volkswagen Scramble event is a great idea,” Barclay-Sellers Said.

“When the players found out that a car had been put up for grabs, I think that really enticed a few more teams to sign up,” added Cook.

“Unfortunately no one was able to get the slam dunk but we were all hoping someone could bring a touch of magic to the hole.

“It was a fabulous day and we were very happy how it was all organized, it ran very smoothly.”

“The Scramble format is unique and the members really enjoy. I look forward to hearing how the winning team goes in the Regional Final which includes a member from our club, Jason Perry.

“I’d like to thank Clive and the team at Bill Buckle Volkswagen for supporting the day, it really did go off without a hitch.”
