Following the success of their first-ever Women’s only Volkswagen Scramble event in 2018, Chequers Golf Club has opened its doors to the golfing community to host its inaugural Volkswagen Scramble Mixed Open.
Nestled in the foothills of Perth just twenty minutes from Midland and Wanneroo, a record field of 60 participants teed it up on Wednesday the 13th of November to great success.
Offering a unique, slightly raised saltine green type as opposed to the traditional bent grass greens, Chequers Golf Club is proud to offer a point of difference for all avid golfers.
“Last year was our first attempt at running a Scramble, the ladies wanted to run it and it was a success, however we decided to go with a mixed open this year,” said Chequers Golf Club Vice Captain, Ray Welton.
“It had the desired effect and numbers were up. This will hold us in good stead to go again next year.”
Knowing the importance of utilizing the promotional material to market the event, Ray was determined to grow his scramble and hit a record number of participants.
“We used largely social media to promote the event, we emailed all golf clubs in WA with details of our event and in fact two teams came from various country clubs in WA,” he said.
“Word of mouth and posters provided by the PGA of Australia were used extensively within the club itself.”
With a net score of 51.7, the winning team of Margaret Bates, Phillip Keen, Barry Rolls and Luke Jurie commented on the smooth running of the event due to the utilisation of the Volkswagen Scramble format.
Impressed by the fast-moving fields, the presentation of the golf course and the display by supporting Volksagen Dealership Wangarra Volkswagen, the group has already earmarked a return to replicate their form in next year’s event.
In his first time supporting a scramble event Wangara Volkswagen Brand Manager, David Hammond, was pleased with the success of the day.
“The event looked great and the day went well and the feedback to the staff attending was all positive,” Hammond said.
“We managed to gather some valuable data for our relevant teams here at Wangara Volkswagen.”
Local Volkswagen dealers have the opportunity to activate and sponsor the host clubs of scramble events in a variety of ways.
“The cars we displayed were a Tiguan 132 R-Line Edition and Amarok Ultimate 580,” he said.
“The Tiguan can fit golf clubs in the boot and five adults, and the Amarok is the top of the range Ute we offer.
“Due to the demographics of the club we thought these vehicles were suitable.”
The success of the day was capped off with a sit down dinner.
As one of seven open events run by the club each year the Volkswagen Scramble is one of the favourites on the calendar.
“I’d like to thank Wangara Volkswagen for getting on board and helping us put on a great day for everyone,” Welton said.
“The girls from Volkswagen Scramble, Lily and Val were exceptional at interacting with the players. We look forward to replicating today’s efforts next season.”
