A hole-in-one is a dream shot for any golfer and at Maryborough Golf Club’s Holden Scramble this month a sensational ace was the highlight of this year’s event.

For the past six years Graham Jacka Holden have offered a brand new car to any player who makes a hole-in-one on the 18th, a feat that until this year had never been achieved.

Peter Kelly, a member of Mt Xavier Golf Club in Ballarat, made history sinking a remarkable hole-in-one and walked away with a brand new Holden courtesy of Graham Jacka Holden, sponsor of the Maryborough Golf Club since 1980 and the Holden Scramble since it’s inception.

This was Peter’s second hole-in-one ever, the first occurring over 40 years ago.

Dealer Principal Ken Jacka was standing near the 18th green handing out drinks to players when Peter’s ball went in the hole.

“At first I didn’t believe it when the observer called over to me that the ball went in off the tee shot. But I walked over and there the ball was… in the hole”, he said.

“It was a fair hit with my trusty 7 iron. I saw the ball disappear and thought it had gone over the back of the green. The spotters were calling out that it had actually gone in [the hole]. It was an unbelievable feeling. I’ve never won anything before in my life”, said Peter.

“Golf is a brilliant social game for individuals. Anybody that doesn’t play golf doesn’t know what their missing”, he said.

Peter has generously offered his team a share in the new car – air out of the tyres! However, he agreed to drive them to golf at the Maryborough Golf Club for their usual Tuesday round of golf.

This year’s Holden Scramble competition saw 24 teams battle it out at Maryborough Golf Club, which saw Grant Rogers, Sean Harkin, Mark Wyllie and Daniel Regan take the honours as the winning team.

“The Maryborough Holden Scramble has a great reputation and is a very unique opportunity for us. We get to support the club and engage about 100 golfers for five to six hours while they do something that they absolutely love”, said Jacka.

An official event of the PGA of Australia, the Holden Scramble is run by golf clubs and PGA Members around Australia.

The Holden Scramble is one of the most recognised brands in Australian golf and Holden has held the naming rights to the Scramble for the past 23 years, making it their longest sponsorship deal outside motorsport.

With support from GM Holden, the Holden Scramble extends out through its chain of local dealerships who become involved with the event at a local level.

Since 1992, the Holden Scramble has seen close to one million Australians tee off, making it the largest and most successful pro-amateur teams event in the country.
