Reigning Volkswagen Scramble champion, PGA Professional Sam Eaves, has returned to Twin Waters Golf Club with a new team for the 2018/19 Volkswagen Scramble Championship Final but has continued his leading streak to take the Warwick Golf Club squad to the top of the leaderboard in round one.

The Head Professional from Warwick Golf Club coached his young team to a round one score of 15-under 57 giving them a nett total of 51.1 in the Elimination Ambrose team format.

Starting their round with seven birdies in a row, a missed putt on the 17th ended the streak for the country Queenslanders before they quickly recovered to fire a total of 15 birdies for the round.

“We got off to a nice start today,” said Eaves. “The boys were nice and calm to start with.”

“We started with seven birdies in a row and unfortunately had a little par on 17 but kept the birdies rolling from there.

“What worked really well today was that when we all hit a bad shot, someone recovered really well.”

Qualifying through to the 2018/19 Volkswagen Scramble Championship Final the team of Eaves, Neil Moore, Caleb King, Rhys Farrell and Chris Hynes was able to draw on previous experience from their Regional Final to maintain composure on the Twin Waters Golf Club layout.

“We had to play a really tough track for our Regional Final at Palmer Gold Coast in hot conditions,” Eaves said.

“After that experience they were able to draw on that today here where you’ve got to drive it well and you’ve got to putt well.”

Sitting 2.6 shots behind Warwick Golf Club, fellow Queensland team Bargara Golf Club holds second place with a nett score of 53.7.

An eagle on the 18th has cemented Riverlakes Golf Club’s lead in the Women’s Volkswagen Scramble Championship Final standings, with a total of 7-under 65 for a nett score of 55.8 setting the pace after round one.

Leading the second-placed team Kew Country Club by 3.9 shots, the team of Ruth McConnell, Dianne Schleemann, Heidi McCulkin and Lorraine Freeth lead by Riverlakes Golf Club Head Professional Mark Poelstra said round one was all about teamwork.

“We got off to a good start, made our birdie early on the first hole followed by a couple of pars, and then got a couple of birdies in a row mid-round,” said Poelstra.

“Hitting on the back-9 was a little bit slow but we made eagle on the last to finish at 7-under and the ladies played extremely well today.

“We went to the 18th hole with Heidi, one of our low-marker ladies who hits a very good ball, she put us about 230 metres out, I plonked it on the green and one of our ladies Lorraine sunk the putt for eagle. She hit it beautifully, right where I said, in the right pace and it went in.”

For Volkswagen Scramble participants the Championship Final experience isn’t just about golf but also the social side of the game.

The Final is the golfing trip of a lifetime for participants who receive four rounds of golf at Twin Waters Golf Club, four nights accommodation at Novotel Twin Waters Resort on the Sunshine Coast and attend a variety of functions to celebrate their achievements across the weekend.

“I think anyone who qualifies to get here, the best prize is getting here,” added Sam Eaves.

“It’s not about winning the Championship Final, that’s a bonus, but certainly getting here is the best part.”
