The Holden Scramble Regional Finals kicked off on Sunday the 4th of March with 11 events being staged during the opening week.
Arundel Hills was the first Regional Final of the 2017/18 Season, showing Allora Golf Club winning with a score of -22.6 under par.
“We tried to qualify at three different venues in their region and had even planned to play a fourth if they weren’t successful at Allora Golf Club”, said Matthew Bradford, Allora team member.
Winner’s Phillip Island Golf Club led by PGA Professional Marcus Liberman, together with Heath Kolac, Adrian Ogorman, James Bain and Scott Fullarton held off a host of teams to grab the one spot available at the Regional Final, played at Sandhurst Club.
This will be Liberman’s first time at Holden Scramble Championships and he is excited to get the team ready for the final.
“It’s truly great to see a little club like ours make it to the big time. Especially having a person like Heath on our team, he’s an inspirational to us all,” said Liberman.
Heath Kolak was involved in a horrendous motor vehicle accident more than a decade ago which resulted in the loss of his left leg above the knee.
“Heath showcases the reality that people with disabilities can play in the mainstream side of our sport. Making it to the Championship final emphasizes the fact that golf does not discriminate and segregate for people with disabilities,” said Christian Hamilton Golf Australia’s National Inclusion Manager.
All Western Australia Regional Finals have been played within the first week at The Vines Resort & Country Club. The winners included Busselton Golf Club, Lakelands Golf Club and Esperance Golf Club, along with the first qualifying Ladies Regional Final team Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club.
Esperance Golf Club traveled just under eight hours to play at The Vines Resort and Country Club.
“We played really well as a team. If there ever was a bad shot, another team member would step up and keep the momentum going,” said PGA Professional Matthew Criss who played with the Esperance Golf Club team.
Lakelands Head Professional, Damian Chatterley, will play his third Holden Scramble Championship and with Lakelands Country Club is excited to practice and “get in as many group sessions as possible before the Championships”.
Other Regional Final Winners such as Kew Golf Club, Braxnton Golf Club, Eynesbury Golf Club, Shelly Beach Golf Club and Riverside Oaks Golf Club will also be represented in Australia’s largest and most successful pro-amateur team’s event, the Holden Scramble, at the event’s Championship Final on the Sunshine Coast.
