There was magic in the air on the last Sunday in September when Royal Perth Golf Club played host to the mixed invitational Volkswagen Scramble.

Located just a few minutes from the Perth CBD and situated on the banks of the Swan River, the event boasted a strong field of 124 participants all vying for a place in the Scramble regional finals.

For one person however, the day was extra special. After playing the game for 32 years and having been a long time fan of the Scramble, Sean Fairfoul scored his first hole-in-one.

Coming into the Scramble event Sean was in sizzling form having posted 72, 71 and 73 in his previous rounds to reduce three shots off his handicap.

Leading into the 2^nd hole of the Scramble event, a 176m par-3,  Sean decided to go big or go home in an effort to boost his team’s standing.

“We bogeyed our first hole and I did say to the team after that, that we would have a hole shot to have a chance,” he said.

“I hit a 6 iron, playing slightly down wind. I hit it really well, and it didn’t leave the line of the flag the whole way. There is no better sight than seeing the ball fly straight at the hole, take a bounce and then disappear.”

While hole-in-one celebrations often vary from person to person, Sean’s reaction was one of pure excitement.

“I assaulted my playing partners in an affectionate manner! Hugs and high fives all round,” Fairfoul said of his celebration.

Finishing on a respectable 14.5 under and taking out fourth place, the team of Fairfoul, Noseworthy, Miles and Bottecchia were unable to bridge the gap between the 1^st place getters.

However, there is no doubt Sean and his team will be back in season 2020/21 to compete for the ultimate prize of a week of golf on the Sunshine Coast in the Championship Finals.

“I make an effort to try and play every year, it is always fun to play in Ambrose competitions,” Fairfoul said.
