Settler’s Run Golf and Country Club have been holding Volkswagen Scramble Local events over the last 10 years, which have always been a large, successful event for their members. However, their Invitational event held on the 23rd of January had taken their event to the next level as the club eyed off new heights.
Their field sizes, although large, had never overcome the elusive 212 player mark, which would see four teams sent through to the Regional Finals. Scott McDermott, PGA Professional and Golf Operations manager at Settlers Run, was eager to see that number eclipse this in the 2020/21 season and be the first Volkswagen Scramble event for the season to get over 200 participants.
The Volkswagen Scramble “is a great way to get ALL members to potentially represent the club, rather than Pennant or elite Amateur events”, said Scott, who loves having the Volkswagen Scramble on the club calendar as it is always “an enjoyable day with plenty of laughs and drinks to finish the day off”.
With a great showing on the day of a whopping 220 competing players, their Volkswagen Scramble remains one of the largest of the 2020/21 season. This was all made possible, Scott says, by “getting out there amongst [the] membership, and giving them the information they need to have that great day”. Having a great relationship with their local Volkswagen dealer, Berwick Volkswagen, certainly made for a marquee event.
While there are many great aspects to hosting a local Volkswagen Scramble event, Scott particularly relates to the opportunity it gives all members of the club to ‘represent them on an external scale, rather than just the better players at the club’.
‘Having the unique Volkswagen Scramble Ambrose style is a fun part of the event, which always produces some friendly rivalry between friends’.
