Are you the next Scramble champion? On-course strategy could be the difference to you heading to the Championship Final.

With the Scramble’s elimination Ambrose format, strategy plays a big part in your team’s success. The final result is not always due to skill level or handicap configurations.

Veteran Scramble Tour Pro’s have provided some tips for you to consider when teeing it up in a Scramble event.

  • You want to have a good putter go first to show the line for the other players. A lot of teams make an average putter go first, but from my experience that’s the wrong play. If everyone can get a good read off the first putt it gives the team a much better chance of making it.

  • Be aware of each of your players strengths and play to these when deciding which shot to select.

  • When choosing which shot to play from around the green, make sure you consider all players level of ability.

I’ve seen many high handicappers over the years hole a really long putt from off the green which we had chosen over a straight forward chip for a good chipper from a lot closer.

Go with the odds, four guys putting from off the green is usually always better than relying on a good chip from a closer more awkward position.

  • Make sure that your higher handicaps get their drives out of the way early in the round so that the pressure is not on them over the last few holes.

  • When selecting which drive to take, it may not always be the longest drive which is the best. You should take into consideration:

    • Where the ball is on the fairway, for example a ball further back but on the right side of the fairway may provide a better approach to the green or eliminate trouble.

    • Avoid taking your low handicappers drive as this will allow them to play the approach shot into the green and set up birdie opportunities.
