The appetite for The Scramble is such in Central Queensland that golfers from throughout the region converged on Yeppoon Golf Club, some travelling over 300km for the first of two local qualifiers this season.

A total of 168 players teed it up on March 24 with the team of Allan Hannah, Glenn Skinner, Majella Becker and Wesley Swaffield (pictured) coming out on top with a score of 15.75-under 55.25.

They finished little more than a shot in front of Brodie Fishlock, Josh Irwin, Anthony Torr and Daniel Spyve (56.37) who edged out the team of Anthony Cook, John Spiller, Rick Hansen and Justin Smith (56.5) by just 0.13 of a shot.

It was cause for double celebration for Scramble Coordinator Wesley Swaffield, who was not only a member of the winning team but played his part in making sure the day was such a success.

“The club has a big Scramble following and participants travel far and wide to enter our event,” said Swaffield.

“Everyone who participates all want to win that prestigious prize of being crowned not only the local event winner, but the champion of The Scramble.”

A member of the Yeppoon Golf Club committee, Swaffield believes part of the reason the day was able to draw so many players from golf clubs throughout Central Queensland was a change to the schedule.

“This is the first Scramble event that I’ve held on a Sunday so it was great to see the support from everyone,” said Swaffield, Yeppoon to host a second Scramble later in the season.

“The weather was perfect and the participants had a great day out.

“Teams were high-fiving and yahooing all over the course.”

The Scramble season is now well and truly in full swing as teams vie for a spot first at the Regional Finals and subsequently the Championship Final.
